Juan pablo castro

Colombian photographer Juan Pablo Castro makes his RALPH PUCCI debut this spring with a new show titled ‘Joy’ at the Miami gallery. Castro’s fascination with color and shape is evident in the photography series which captures deconstructed images of public structures. His background as an industrial designer informs his artistic eye, which translates small details – the curve of a column or the geometric pattern of windows – into a story. Castro chats with us about the new exhibition and the inspiration behind his photographs.

What is your inspiration for this series?

This series of photographs has developed as I travel through life. For me, the greatest inspiration comes from two places: first, my admiration for art, architecture and structures; the second is definitely my education in industrial design where I learned about different materials and design trends. These two elements spur my interest in documenting public spaces and portraying them in a new way.

How does Miami influence your work?

For me, Miami is a cultural microcosm for the rest of the world and has been incredibly enlightening. Living here for ten years has given me the opportunity to experience different cultures and their visions of the world. I am proud and happy to live in Miami—its color, diversity and simplicity have left a mark on my work and on my life.

Why did you decide to name this exhibition 'Joy’?

I decided to call this exhibition “Joy” because of the colors I use in this series of photographs, a fun and playful interpretation of everyday life. Also, being part of a project with such a big name in the industry is definitely a very happy moment of my career. I think that we are in difficult times and for me it’s always important to bring a message to people’s minds, especially a positive message.
